STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. - As of Wednesday morning, according to Guy Gifford with the Department of Natural Resources, the Lake Spokane fire has burned nearly 900 acres and is 0% contained. Fire crews have set up a fire line along the perimeter of the fire but are still calling the fire 0% contained until they can see how that line will hold up during the heat of the day.

Thick smoke can be seen from this fire along highway 291.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

Firefighters are battling a fast-moving wildfire in Stevens County in the Long Lake area.

The fire is burning near the intersection of Highway 291 and Highway 231. Guy Gifford from the Washington Department of Natural Resources tells KHQ as of 11:30pm, it is has grown to around 700 acres in size. The fire is burning in a heavily wooded area and Wednesday afternoon, flames could be seen up to 14 feet high above the tree line.

Level 2 and level 3 evacuations are in place in certain areas. "Level 2" means you should be ready to evacuate on short notice and "level 3" means it is recommended that you leave now. Right now the American Red Cross has set up a shelter at Lakeside High School to serve the people of the 30 homes that have been advised to evacuate.

Roads in the area have been opening and closing throughout the night, however as of 11:30pm, all roads in the area are open.

There are over 100 firefighters from multiple counties and DNR on the ground, as well as seven aircraft dumping water and fire retardant during the daytime hours, according Gifford.

As of 11:30pm, there is 0% containment. Crews will use bulldozers and manpower throughout the night to build a line around the fire.

So far, no structures have been burned.
