PASCO, Wash. - This week, Chiawana High School's Roman Ruiz is doing something he never imagined.

"I never really saw myself going all the way to Texas for track," says Ruiz.

But that's exactly what he's doing: heading to the National Junior Olympics in Texas to compete in the Decathlon. What makes it even more impressive is that he's new to the sport.

"I never really thought about it until this year," says Ruiz. "My coach brought it up again, since I was improving a lot in hurdles and pole vault, which are big point scorers. Thought it'd be fun, and thought it was a good idea. I threw [discus] in middle school, and did events in high school, too."

The Decathlon consists of 10 events, and Ruiz has been training non-stop. But once he arrives on-site, he says he's going to center himself.

"The first couple days I'll be resting, since I don't compete until later days. I'll probably just get pumped-up, then I'll just want to get it done."
