KENNEWICK, WA - A historic day for Trios Health and the community Tuesday as a new hospital officially opened their doors to patients.

It took a team of health professionals to make the move over to the new Trios Southridge Hospital. Ambulances lined up at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to transport patients to the new hospital.

The biggest change includes moving the emergency room from Auburn St. in Kennewick to the new Southridge location.

In total it is less than five miles from hospital to hospital but it took a team to make it happen.

"It's a new era in the history of the Tri-Cities," Mahmoud Al-Hawamdeh, MD said.

The new Trios Southridge Hospital opened their doors to the first patient just before seven Tuesday morning.

"It was a very exciting day today as the first day we opened the Trios Southridge Hospital and we're so excited in the first few minutes that we started operating we had our first patient," added Al-Hawamdeh.

Three Medstar ambulances transported 28 patients to the new facility.

Hospital staff said they are just excited to start serving the community.

"The staff is very excited, I think it's a great facility and we're excited to share it with our patients and with the public for the first time, so it's a great day," Chuck Barnes, Executive Director, Support Services said.

Staff reopened the old Auburn street emergency room as the new Urgent Care Center, that facility will now serve walk-in  and primary care patients from 8:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m from Monday through Friday.

The Auburn campus is now the Trios Women's and Children's Hospital, it houses pediatrics and the family birthing center.

Hospital staff say the move went smoothly thanks to months of preparations.

"Almost three months of training and orientations of the new building as well as four years in planning to get to this point lots of hard work by a lot of good people," Barnes said.
