More Homes Burned in Moccasin Hill Fire in Klamath County

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Klamath County wildfire was more destructive than authorities initially believed.

After the fire ignited in the rural Moccasin Hill subdivision near Sprague River, officials reported six houses destroyed along with 14 outbuildings - barns, garages, shops and the like.

But fire managers toured the burn area Tuesday because residents said more structures had burned when the fire broke out Sunday

Spokeswoman Ashley Lertora (luh-TOR'-ah) says they found 17 primary residences destroyed. Besides houses, that includes campers, trailers and fifth-wheelers people could live in. Sixteen "other" structures, generally called outbuildings, also burned.

Lertora says a containment line is around the 4-square-mile burn area, and crews are working toward its center, putting out hot spots. Some of the 750 people working the fire are expected to be reassigned Wednesday.
