WEST RICHLAND, WA - The Veterans Memorial in West Richland has been vandalized for a second time.

NBC Right Now told you about the original vandalism back in March. The combat veterans group rededicated the repaired memorial on the 4th of July, but recently discovered it has been tampered with again.

"They will be caught," said May Hays from the West Richland Area Chamber of Commerce. The group helped raise funds and install the memorial when it was originally dedicated.

A new report has already been filed with West Richland Police to investigate the recent crime. Back in march a vandal broke off a helmet, a bayonet and an M-16 rifle that form what's called “the soldier’s cross”, which is a remembrance to those who have served.

"This is not just a piece of metal. This is a symbol to represent the fallen," said Eugene Lamm from the local Combat Veterans International chapter.

This time it appears the combat boots were broken off from their mounting on the memorial. They were not stolen, but someone wiped the adhesive material from them on the plaque and rifle.

"One of the things is posting somebody here 24/7 until we get the security cameras in place," said Hays.

They plan to mount a camera on a nearby pole to watch over the area but until then it is the veterans themselves that will take shifts patrolling the memorial. They say they would like the vandal to help in the restoration.

"Freedom isn't free and without them we wouldn't have the life we have. They need to learn that lesson."

If you'd like to help in the efforts to restore the memorial through a donation or other services you can get in touch with the West Richland Area Chamber of Commerce by calling 509-967-0521.
