MORROW COUNTY, OR - On Wednesday, just before 2:00 p.m., the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a field fire in the area of Clarks Canyon Rd and State Hwy 207, which is about 5.5 miles south west of Heppner. As Fire Chief Rusty Estes arrived on scene the fire was already growing at a rapid rate.

Multiple fire agencies from all over Morrow County and Umatilla County responded to the call for assistance. In addition to the fire agencies, the Oregon Department of Transportation, Morrow County Ambulance, Centurylink, Columbia Basin Electric, the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, and numerous other ranch and business assets rushed to assist.

Fed by a light but virtually continuous NW wind, the fire moved quickly to cross Clarks Canyon Rd, State Hwy 207 and Upper Rhea Creek Rd. The fire was eventually stopped near the intersection of Sanford Canyon Rd and Upper Rhea Creek Rd. No structures were lost although the fire did get uncomfortably close to some. Some power poles were damaged as well as phone service interruption due to damaged lines.

Early estimates put the total acreage burned at between 15,000 and 20,000. The fire covered a distance of nearly 5 miles. The area consumed by the fire was a mixture of standing wheat and CRP.

Fire crews will maintain a vigil looking for potential hot-spots and possible re-kindle.The nature and cause of the fire is under investigation.
