UPDATE/BURBANK, WA - Walla Walla County Sheriff Deputies have booked a man into jail after he peacefully surrendered during a standoff.

Deputies and the S.W.A.T. team surrounded a home at Birch Street and Fourth Street in Burbank late Wednesday night. Deputies say what started as a call about a domestic disturbance became a standoff when Michael Collins refused to come outside.

Chief Deputy John King says Collins was saying police would have to kill him if they wanted to get him out, because he didn't want to face jail time.

After hours of negotiations however, King says deputies got Collins to change his mind.

"Michael was talkative," King said. "Deputy Schram, who knows him from several prior contacts, had built a rapport with him over the phone, and convinced him that coming out and doing this peacefully was the best way to go. and it resolved itself just like that."

During the standoff, deputies evacuated some people living nearby. Deputies let everyone go back inside their homes shortly after Collins was arrested.
