UPDATE: Watermelon Hill fire is now 100% contained. 4 hand crews and 1 engine strike team will continue to mop up for the next few days. This fire is burning 7 miles SW of Cheney, WA and started on July 19th.

UPDATE:
The Watermelon Hill fire remains 80% contained. Fish Trap resort evacuations have been lowered to advisory level according to the WA Department of Natural Resources. The fire has been reduced to 10,518 acres. This fire is burning 7 miles SW of Cheney, WA and started on July 19th.

UPDATE: As of 9:00pm Sunday night, the Watermelon Hill fire is 40% contained. All level 2 and 3 evacuations have been downgraded and the only place still under a level 3 evacuation is the Fish Trap resort.

UPDATE: Watermelon Hill fire grew to 13,000 acres overnight, fire fighters have fought the fire over night and is still 0 percent contained still.  

Level 3 evacuations are only in place for Scroggie Rd in the Fishtrap Lake Resort area. 

We spoke to the Spokane Co. Incident Team and they said you may return to your home in all other areas, however to be AWARE the fire is still active.

The shelter at Cheney Middle School is closing at 4 p.m., there were no parties planning on staying over night at the location.

The fire is moving west and east right now, but the winds are making it unpredictable. Level 3 evacuations are Lance Hills Rd, Phillips Rd, Scroggie, Dover and Sterling, Pine Springs. Level 2 evacuations are West Baker Rd, S Griffin Rd. Tyler (city) has been downgraded to a level 1 evacuation.

It is widening east and west. The western border is 4-5 miles from I-90 east and the eastern border is on the Amber Lake area. There are 279+ personnel on the fire.

The fire is about 7 miles SW Cheney right now. There are 279 + personnel working on this fire.

State fire assistance has been mobilized under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan in support of local firefighters working to contain the Watermelon Hill Fire, in Spokane County, near Cheney, WA. Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources on July 19, 2014, at 7:30 pm at the request of Spokane County Fire District 3.100 residences and an unknown number of outbuildings are threatened by the fire. Level 3 evacuation orders in in place for some areas near the fire.

Mobilization specialists from the Fire Protection Bureau have ordered five strike teams (25 engines and 5 water tenders) to assist resources already on scene. An interagency type 3 Incident Management organization is currently managing the incident. A type 2 incident management team has been ordered for the fire.

The State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at Camp Murray has been activated to Phase II, to coordinate state assistance for the Watermelon Hill Fire. Personnel from the Office of the State Fire Marshal will be on scene to coordinate dispatch of resources, and other personnel will staff the State EOC.

Under the State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan, the Fire Protection Bureau coordinates the initial dispatch and continued administrative oversight of resources and personnel for the duration of the incident. The Mobilization Plan is implemented to provide a process to quickly notify, assemble and deploy fire service personnel, equipment and other resources from around the state when fires, disasters or other events exceed the capacity of local jurisdictions. KHQ.COM - A fire that started around 3:00 p.m. has now erupted into a 2500-3000 acre fire.

The fire started in Lincoln Co. and due to the wind it is blew into Spokane Co. Right now it is zero percent contained.

The Tyler Cheney area is under level 3 evacuation.

DNR, Fire District 3 and air support are fighting the fire. More resources are heading to the scene.

According to Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Wade Magers's FB post, "the Fishtrap fire was reportedly started by 3 unknown individuals in a yellow Dodge pickup with a black stripe shooting tanerite (explosive) anyone with information is encouraged to call the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office at 725-3501."
