UPDATE / ECHO, OR - Oregon State Police have released new information about the on-the-job death of a Department of Transportation employee.

Police say 54-year-old Donald Kendall was working on a chip seal paving operation on Highway 320, south of Interstate 84 near Echo on Tuesday afternoon. 

Police say Kendall had been standing behind an ODOT dump truck when it began to slowly back up, hit him and ran over him. 

Troopers say other ODOT employees tried to save Kendall until paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene. 

Kendall had been a transportation maintenance specialist for nearly 30 years.

Officers say it happened around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday along Highway 320, south of Interstate 84 near Echo. The accidental death happened at a chip seal paving operation work site. The victim's name has not yet been released.

Highway 320 is closed at the scene and while officers investigate. No other information is available at this time.
