Yakima Avenue Gets Facelift With New Summer Banners

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA. -- You may have noticed crews giving Yakima Avenue a little facelift Tuesday morning. The change is so subtle you might not notice it unless you're looking for it but Yakima Avenue has brand new banners lining the streets.

It's all part of a brand new program to provide a fresh look for downtown. There are 75 different banner locations on the Avenue and they are being changed from the spring banners to the summer themed ones. You will notice 4 different banners that all relate to our local area. One is of a trout, another, cherries, and the last two are butterflies and a sunflower. The city hopes this change of scenery will be noticed by locals and out of town visitors to the downtown area.

"It adds a little bit of color," Economic Development Manager Sean Hawkins said. "We like the fact that it brightens up Yakima Avenue. And for a traveler coming here, I think it shows our connection to some of our natural environment."

The banners will be changed again later this year to a fall theme. Then the winter banners will go up and after that spring banners and so on. Another great part about the banners is that local artists at the Field Group designed all the pictures and it cost less than $10,000 total.

It's a little thing but the city is hoping that these small banners will help a big difference in the overall atmosphere downtown.
