KENNEWICK, WA - The City of Kennewick could join the growing list of cities across Washington State to ban retail pot sales.

Tuesday night, City Council members discussed whether to ban recreational and medical marijuana from being sold, processed or grown in Kennewick city limits.

Council members say they want to join the several other cities that have enacted similar bans.

The council also expressed its concern that marijuana businesses will have a hard time using banks that won't want to work with them because of federal law.

"I know the chief has express that when you have these types of establishments that have large amounts of cash on hard plus the marijuana itself, they're probably a pretty attractive target for crime," Lisa Beaton, Kennewick City Attorney said.

In moving forward with a proposed ban, the planning commission will draft up an ordinance that will go to public hearing.

The issue could be up for vote by the Kennewick City Council as early as September.
