Gesa Credit Union Rallies Community to Raise More than $90,000 for Safe Harbor

KENNEWICK, WA - Organizers at Safe Harbor Support Center and My Friends Place in Kennewick can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Wednesday morning, Gesa Credit Union presented the homeless shelter with a check for more than $90,000. Gesa matched up to $15,000; the rest of the money came directly from the community.

The state recently reallocated the shelter's funding, prompting them to cut services. Organizers say they'll be able to reopen their trauma child center, counseling programs and resume regular hours with the new funding.

"This money will help bring back what we lost and give us an opportunity to look for sustainability in other funding sources, so we don't have to keep reaching out to the community, and the response has been great," said Karen Kirk-Brockman, the executive director of Safe Harbor & My Friends Place.

Organizers plan to resume regular hours as early as this weekend. The trauma center is expected to reopen on September 1st.

Safe Harbor Support Center served more than 400 families last year.
