Montana Little League is hosting the 2014 Senior Softball Western Regional Tournament, featuring the local ZooTown team, with girls ages 14-16, that has an impressive roster.
"This team is the best team I've ever seen. Everyone is from different schools, we have Florence, Big Sky, Loyola, and Frenchtown. We come from everywhere, and it's the best," says ZooTown outfielder Frankie Schwenk.
This weekend, the best Senior softball teams from around the region will compete for a chance to move onto Nationals in Sussex County, Delaware.
"We have a team from Billings coming, we have the Southern California Champion, Northern California Champion, Arizona Champion, Oregon Champion, Washington Champion, and the champion from Hawaii," says ZooTown manager Kevin Miltko.
"This is a big deal. We don't ever get to see teams from Hawaii, or California come, so if we come out and play the best we can, I think we can beat these teams and have a great chance of going to Delaware," adds Schwenk.
For the players, while they haven't had a ton of time to train with one another, it's an exciting opportunity to play with the regions best before school starts back up.
"It's really fun, instead of being rivals to actually be on the same team as people I competed with in high school and ASA, and it's awesome to come together and have some really good players on this team," says ZooTown outfielder Holly Hale.
"We have some of the best pitchers in the state on our team. Big Sky (AA) took second at state, and we have two of their pitchers, so we've got a good lineup of pitchers and batters," says Schwenk.
It's all par for the course, being a Softball player in the state of Montana.
"These girls play on 3 or 4 different teams, and it's pretty exciting to have them all come together, and it's important to them to represent Missoula and try to get to the world series," says Miltko.
