Yakima School District Offering No Cost Meals To All Student This Year

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA-- Starting this fall all students in the Yakima School District will be eligible for no cost school breakfasts and lunches this upcoming school year.

With a new federal la, school districts with high poverty levels like Yakima can give students one breakfast and lunch per day for free.

Another good thing for parents, they do not need to fill out an application for the free meals like in the past.  Meals will be recorded with the students who get them so there are no repeat meals.

The Yakima School District superintendent says they are doing this because it will let students function better during the school day.

“When you're hungry, it's really hard to think about much else, and so for students to be bale to succeed academically, it's important that they in fact have a nutritious breakfast and a nutritious lunch and now we can guarantee that," said YSD Superintendent Dr. Elaine Beraza.

Yakima County has the largest number of students in the state who applied for no cost meals in the past.

Staff with the school district said there are roughly 15,500 students in the district and this new program will be able to feed every single on of them.
