Health Fair Brings Families Together and Educates Kids About Healthy Lifestyles

YAKIMA, WA-- For the past seven years heath care providers from across the state gather in Yakima for Fiesta de Salud, a health fair that aims to prevent health issues before they start.

"It’s for preventative services and health," said event organizer Juanita Silva.

It all started back in 2007 when the community came together asking for a way to have easy access to health screening.

Memorial Hospital worked with other health agencies to make that wish come true.

"We are able to provide three screening all at one shot.  Diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure and get them out the door knowing their results," Silva said.

But as the event grew bigger, more and more families starting showing up to make sure their kids started living a healthy lifestyle early.

Amanda Hayes is a volunteer at the health fair and brought her three kids who are all under the age of eight years old to learn what it means to be healthy.

"It teaches them good habits for the future when they get older and that's one thing that I believe really strongly in," Hayes said.

Hayes said she wants her kids to know the value of a healthy lifestyle.

"It’s fun being outside.  You don't always have to be inside playing video games or on your tablet and phones and stuff like that," she said.

Silva said this will reverse an unhealthy trend in our community for future generations.

"I think the answer is pretty obvious.  We have found out the know our adults... one in three are in risk of diabetes and we want to prevent instead of managing disease," Silva said.

But for now the Hayes kids only have to worry about having fun.

"Oh yeah! They’re loving it.  They are running around here somewhere," Hayes said.

Silva also told me when people come in for the free screening at the event.  If there are any abnormalities in someone's cholesterol or blood pressure, they help them find a care provider to get them back on track and they will continue to get care while they still need it.
