Therapeutic bacteria’s ability to prevent obesity

(KHQ MD)- An exciting new study is showing some very promising hope in the fight against obesity.  A scientist at Vanderbilt is creating a bacteria that acts as a therapeutic compound in the gut preventing weight gain, even in high-fat diets.  The bacteria is similar to pro-biotics found in yogurt.  Pro-biotics are a special class of bacteria that seems to create an environment that promotes the absorption and management of nutrients in a variety of different ways.

Doctor William Schaffner, of Vanderbilt University says studies in mice indicate that the bacteria in our intestines can have an influence how slim or how stout we are. "If we could figure out how the bacteria does this, like do they create a special protein, maybe that protein could be used as a drug or we could develop a vaccine against obesity?

A lawsuit filed last week in U.S. District Court in Colorado says Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO'-mahr fah-ROOK' ahb-DOOL'-moo-TAH'-lahb) is in indefinite, long-term solitary confinement at the federal Supermax penitentiary in Florence, Colorado.
