Richland Man Killed in Plane Crash Near Idaho Montana Border

UPDATE:  More information about the plane crash that took the life of 72 year old Milon Meyer of Richland Monday morning west of Lolo Pass near the Idaho Montana border.  

The Clearwater County Sheriff's Office received a call from Missoula County Sheriff's Office, that there was an aircraft that had gone off radar. The Idaho Bureau of Aeronautics was also advised.  Two Bear Air Helicopter of Whitefish, Montana in Flathead County responded from the Hamilton area where they were on standby for another search, and a Forest Service Helicopter was requested by Clearwater County Sheriff's Office to go into the area. The Two Bear Air Helicopter spotted the wreckage near the Blackhead Mountain area.  Two Bear Air was not able to land near the crash site but used their hoist to lower a medic to the scene. They were able to confirm that the pilot was deceased and no one else was on board. A Forest Service helicopter was able to drop off some Forest Service employees and secure the scene until both Clearwater County Deputies and Forest Service Law Enforcement arrived at the scene.  The Clearwater County Sheriff's Office and Clearwater County Search and Rescue will secure the scene until FAA investigators arrive.

The pilot had contacted another airplane Monday morning and reported there was oil on the plane's windshield. The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff says the pilot was unsure if the plane would make to its next planned stop in Helena, Montana.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the airplane was a single-engine Lancair Legacy.  The Lancair Legacy is a two seat plane that comes as a kit.

The Clearwater County Sheriff says the pilot was flying to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for an EAA convention.  EAA AirVenture

is an annual gathering of aviation enthusiasts held each summer at Wittman Regional Airport.
