KENNEWICK, WA - Volunteers cleaned up Columbia Park after Water Follies weekend ended.

The cleanup crew is responsible for setting up for the races, and they break everything down as soon as the last race is over.  They also made sure teams could easily remove their boats from the site.

“We take the gates and set them aside so the boat racers and teams can connect to their boats and get them out,” said Juan Marin, Water Follies volunteer.

That process alone took about 45 minutes to complete.  Volunteers usually start with a core group of 20, but that number gradually decreased as each break down process was completed.

“The Lampson guys come in and stay here all day.  They get very few breaks.  The operators are pretty much our unsung heroes,” said Marin.

The setup and cleanup had around 1,000 volunteers this year, but there were more last year.

“We're a little bit short this year.  We're doing our best this year to get the park cleaned up and back in the condition that it was in when we got the park,” said Water Follies Co-Chairman Kevin Smith.

Volunteers operated forklifts and made sure all items returned to the warehouse.  The docks are the only thing allowed to stay all year.

“This would not happen without the volunteers.  I appreciate every volunteer that we have and that's what it takes to make this a great event,” said Smith.

Volunteers also took down the hydroplane display to remodel it for next year’s 50th anniversary.
