RICHLAND, WA- Milon Meyer was killed when his plane crashed Monday.

Meyer designed and built things for a living.  He also built the plane he flew Monday.  The 72-year-old left Richland and was on his way to a convention for airplane enthusiasts in Wisconsin when his plane crashed near the Montana-Idaho border.

Meyer helped design buildings and had a long history with the company M & D Professional Services Engineering Firm before he took some time off.  He designed that building and designed his church as well.

“He was just a tremendously gifted engineer and analyst,” said George Abatt, Senior Engineering Advisor at M & D.

Meyer’s pastor was close to him and had known him for a number of years.

“He taught me lessons.  I'm supposed to be the one who believes all things are possible.  Milon would say, ‘If we're supposed to do this, we can do this,’” said Pastor of Meadow Springs Presbyterian Church, Robert Johnson.

The plane Meyer flew was an experimental home built aircraft.  He was also an experienced pilot and had been flying for a couple of decades.  He even flew the aircraft a few times before taking it on his last flight.

“An experimental aircraft can range from all different types of aircrafts, from little small putt-putts, all the way up to turbo props,” said Clif Dyer, owner of Sundance Aviation in Richland.

“In his semi-retirement, he was just trying to get a lot of things done that he didn't have the time to do earlier in his life. He was looking for ways to contribute to the community and find fulfilling things to do,” said Abatt.

During the flight Meyer reported seeing oil on his windshield.

“As much as his death was a tragedy, at least he died doing something he loved doing and that was flying his airplane,” said Johnson.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the crash.
