Green Bluff grass fire: 3 buildings destroyed at Walker's Farm

Posted: Updated:

GREEN BLUFF, Wash.- A fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon at a farm on Green Bluff was 100% contained by 6pm.

The fire started on property owned by Walker's Farm. Fire crews were called out to the farm about 2:30pm. By the time they got there, the grass fire had spread to a tree and an outbuilding. Ultimately, three buildings were destroyed, including a barn. The barn was used by Walker's Farm to sell produce during the Fall Harvest. The other two buildings were a chicken coop and a storage shed.

There were 26 people dispatched to fight this fire, 20 from Spokane County District 4 and six from the Department of Natural Resources. There were no injuries.

The operations chief for District 4, Randy Johnson, says that one of the biggest problems they face fighting these fires is the heat. He said because it is so hot, they require more crews on scene to do the same amount of work.

Johnson also wants to remind people to be extremely careful this time of year, especially when using gas appliances outside. He says there should be no structures within 30 feet of your barbeque.
