SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Spokane Indians opened up their five-game series against the Hillsboro Hops at Avista Stadium on Wednesday, July 30, and things did not go quite as expected as Spokane fell to the Hops 9-1.

Hillsboro (28-19) jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to a Nate Irving sac fly to right to score Stryker Trahan. Nate Robertson went on to double in Jordan Parr for the second run of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth the Indians (28-19) threatened with men on second and third and only one out but failed to capitalize. Hops starting pitcher Ryan Doran got Juremi Profar to foul out to first and Pepe Cardona to fly out to right field to quiet Spokane.

Hillsboro went on to score score three runs in the top of the sixth on a three run home run by Zach Esquerra. The Hops would score three more in the top of the seventh to extend their lead 8-0.

Spokane squeezed out their only run in the bottom of the seventh after Cardona singled to left and Fernado Vivilli scored him on a double down the left field line.

Hillsboro would add one more run late in the game to round out the scoreboard.

Esquerra led the charge for the Hops with 1-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI. Doran dominated the Indians over 6.2 innings, giving up only one earned run and striking out 8 batters.

Cardona finished the night 2-for-3 and scored Spokane's lone run.

Both teams will return to Avista Stadium tomorrow for game two at 6:30 p.m. PDT.
