Pippins Edge Out Kelowna, 2-1

Posted:

YAKIMA, Wash. – A couple weeks ago, the Yakima Valley Pippins were struggling to win one-run games. However, they have turned a corner as of late, the most recent of the one-run wins coming in 2-1 fashion Friday night against the Kelowna Falcons.

The Pippins (28-18) put both of their runs up in the bottom of the 1st, including an RBI single by Mitch Skaggs against Kelowna starter Joel Lamont.

With the two-run advantage, Pippins starter Mitch Yada, in only his second start of the season, kept Kelowna (15-31) quiet early. The lefty out of Central Washington University allowed just four hits over the first couple innings, and got help from left fielder Kyle Thomson in the 3rd, who threw out a would-be run at home plate to keep the Pippins up 2-0.

Yada gave up his only run of the game in the 6th on an RBI single by Ryan Degner, scoring Kody Mathews, both of whom were 3-4 in Friday’s game.

Despite missing a good scoring opportunity in the 8th, Kenny Rosenberg and the Pippins shut the door, stranding Degner at 2nd base to extend the team’s winning streak to five games.

The Pippins were outhit 8-5 by Kelowna, with three of those hits coming off the bat of Justin Jacobs, who went 3-4 in Friday’s contest. With the win, Yakima Valley picked up its 28th win and guaranteed itself a plus-.500 season. The Pippins are back in action Saturday night against the Falcons at 7:05, with Matt Trask making his first league start of the season for the Pippins.
