Fire Destroys Multiple Apartments in Yakima

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, Wa.- Last night a fire ripped through an apartment complex, leaving families without their homes or their belongings, but thanks to quick acting neighbors and fast responses from the fire department, no one lost their lives.

A small apartment complex on Garfield avenue in Yakima caught fire last night. Flames could be seen from multiple streets over, and
the blaze left three units completely destroyed and another with smoke damage. This fire left nine people without homes.
Officials at the Yakima county fire department say they aren't sure yet what caused the fire.

"The fire is at this point under investigation, they did have working smoke detectors and the apartments were fire stopped in both the basement and the attic, so it made it harder for the fire to spread," said Yakima Fire Department's Ted Vander Houwen.

But it wasn't just the up to date fire safety equipment in the building that kept everyone safe, it was also a good Samaritan.
"I ran around knocked on all the doors to get everybody out and got them all out thank god nobody got hurt," said Richard VanWechel.

Richard lives directly behind the apartments and says he looked out his window after smelling the smoke and could see flames engulfing the building.
Officials say when they arrived at the scene this good Samaritan was helping in anyway he could.
Ted Vander Houwen said, "The reporting party did a great job he called 911 and was evacuating the building at the same time while he was answering questions for 911."

luckily for those living in the apartments no one was seriously hurt and officials say they had all hands on deck for this fire. The crews worked together to stop this fire from destroying more than it already had.

Now all that's left for tenants to do is pick up the pieces, rebuild, and hope their street doesn't see any more fires in the future.
