Goldendale Woman Arrested in Daughter's Death

CANNON BEACH, OR - A woman from Goldendale faces murder charges in the death of her 2-year-old daughter.

Cannon Beach Police arrested 40-year-old Jessica Smith on Sunday after a Coast Guard helicopter saw her SUV.

Smith went missing on Friday after her two daughters were found by a housekeeper in a hotel room along the Oregon Coast. Police say the toddler was dead, her teenage sister seriously injured.

Police say 13-year-old Alana Smith is recovering from severe cuts at a hospital in Portland, she has yet to tell authorities what happened in the hotel room. Paramedics airlifted her to the hospital in critical condition, but officers say she is expected to survive.

Investigators say it's still unclear how 2-year-old Isabella Smith died, but police have ruled her death a homicide.

Court records show Jessica Smith was supposed to share custody of the girls with their father last week, but police say that never happened.
