ELLENSBURG, WA. - The Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide federal funds to help fight the Snag Canyon Fire burning near Ellensburg.

So far the fire has destroyed 12 homes and is threatening 180 more about 10 miles north of Ellensburg. About 600 people have been evacuated from the area. FEMA approved the state's request for assistance Sunday after determining the fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster.

Local, state, and federal firefighters are currently battling the blaze. Other resources include strike teams, type 2 IA crews, air resources, tenders, and type 2 Incident Management Team.

The fire has burned about 3,000 acres and is currently 0% contained. The fire sparked Saturday during a lightning storm. There are currently no reports of any injuries.

A shelter has been opened at the Mercer Creek Church in Ellensburg.
