Firefighters Battle Nine Fires in Umatilla County After Lightning Activity

PENDLETON, Ore. - Firefighters took on a total of nine wildfires in the Umatilla National Forest after recent lightning activity.

Seven fires sparked on the North Fork John Day Ranger District. Firefighters contained six of them at less than one acre. The largest was the Bone Canyon Fire, four miles west of Dale near Bone Point. Firefighters contained  it at 19 acres.

One fire sparked on the Heppner Ranger District near Madison Butte. Another fire was reported on the Walla Walla Ranger District just south of Jubilee Lake. Firefighters contained both fires at less than one acre.

Firefighters will continue to monitor the areas as the weather this week remains dry and hot.
