Update (8/06/14): The outdoor water restriction  the went into effect on Monday ended at noon Wednesday. Outdoor water usage was prohibited in the 48 hour period so reservoir water levels could be restored.

The city is now asking that everyone avoid watering in the middle of the day.  They are also suggesting the adoption of an "even/odd" watering system, meaning that even-numbered addresses water on even dates, and odd-numbered addresses water on odd dates.  Theses restrictions did/do not affect Eastern Washington University, since they have a separate water system fed by their own wells.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

CHENEY, Wash.- Effective Monday afternoon and for the foreseeable future, water usage in Cheney for lawn irrigation systems and sprinklers is prohibited for the next 48 hours while water levels are restored in the reservoirs. Watering may resume at noon on Wednesday, August 6.

Additionally, once irrigation resumes, citizens and organizations are encouraged to avoid watering during the middle of the day, as the hot sun will evaporate the water before it gets to plants and vegetation.

This restriction does not affect Eastern Washington University, as they have a separate water system fed by their own wells.

The City of Cheney water production facilities include eight ground water wells that have the capacity to produce 3,000 gallons per minute when running at full capacity. Water is stored in five reservoirs with the City’s water system. Cheney groundwater wells 6 and 7 were without power for over 15 hours because they are located in areas serviced by an Inland Power line. The power outage to the pumps, coupled with the extreme heat and dry conditions, place an extreme stress on our water system capabilities.

Cheney water system staff recommend that for the remainder of the summer, citizens and businesses use an even/odd watering schedule in which even-numbered addresses water on even-numbered dates, and odd-numbered addresses water on odd-numbered dates.

For updates on the water use restriction and additional information on the City of Cheney water system, please check this website.
