DECISION 2014: Primary Election Results

After a Primary election, the top two candidates in each race advance to the November General Election. So while incumbent Ozzie Knezovich held a comfortable lead over challenger Doug Orr, both will be on November's ballot. After the first round of ballots were counted, Knezovich held 72% of the vote, while Orr had 27%. 

In the race for Spokane County Prosecutor, Larry Haskell held 57% of the vote, while Breean Beggs had 43%. Both will appear on November's General Election ballot.

In the race for U.S. House Representative District 5, incumbent Cathy McMorris Rodgers held 52% of the vote and it appears she will face Democrat Joe Pakootas, who had 29% of the vote Tuesday night. Dave Wilson had 11%, and Tom Horne had 8%.

Republicans Matt Shea and Josh Arritola will both advance to the General Election to run for the seat of State Representative District 4, Position 2. Shea had 55% of the votes while Arritola had 45%.

In the race for Washington State Senator District 6,  Michael Baumgartner held 57% of the votes, and Rich Cowan had 43%.

The next ballot count for Spokane County will happen on Wednesday. Additional ballot counts in other counties varies, but keep checking back for the latest numbers.

SPOKANE, Wash.- The Primary Election in Washington is Tuesday, August 5th. On Monday KHQ spoke with the Spokane County Elections Office. They told us that the Elections Office has mailed out nearly 300,000 ballots and so far they've only received about 23% back. Statewide, 40% of voters are expected to mail in a vote. But in Spokane that number will be closer to 35%.

Here's how the Primary process works: The top two people in each race will advance to the November General Election. However, not every race has more than two people. Statewide, in 95 of the 123 legislative races on the ballot, there's no contest. And in 22 races the candidates are running unopposed. So this vote really only makes a difference for races with more than two people running.

In Spokane County there are only four races with more than two people. Those are the U.S. Representative for District 5, State Representative Position 1, the County Commissioner for District 3, and the County Treasurer. In all the other races, the candidates will automatically advance to the November Election.

If you plan on dropping your ballot in the mail, it has to be postmarked no later than Tuesday. You can also drop it off ay any of the white ballot drop boxes around the County. If you do put it in a drop box, it must be in no later than 8pm.

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when sending in their ballot, is forgetting to sign the white envelope. If you forget to do that, the Elections office sends you a letter asking for your signature. They can't count your ballot until they have your signature.
