WINDSTORM 2014: Lake Roosevelt poker run ends with boaters hanging on for dear life

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash.- More than 10 boats were rocked on the shores of Lake Roosevelt during Saturday's massive windstorm. It's the last thing that anyone expected because it happened during the Roosevelt Poker Run.

There were 60-plus boats on the lake for the Poker Run. A poker run is an organized event where participants visit five to seven checkpoints, drawing a playing card at each one. The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the run.

KHQ obtained home video of the boats being hit with wind, rain and large waves. You can see boaters struggling to hold on to their boats during the storm, which lasted for about half an hour. At least four boats were capsized, and for several hours five people were missing. They were all eventually found safe.

We're told heavy machinery will be needed to help clear some of the debris from Lake Roosevelt.
