RICHLAND, WA - A Richland woman is in the hospital after a fire that started in the basement she rents out.
It took help from the people she lives with to get her out safely. The home is rented out to a couple that lives upstairs as well as the middle aged woman who was injured who lives in that basement.
The woman made it to the backyard at first but Jake Wood, who lives upstairs says she was frantic and confused. She ran back into the basement in her confusion. He had to yell through the thick smoke for her to get out. She made her way upstairs once more and collapsed before Wood covered her in a towel and brought her to the end of the driveway to wait for transportation to Kadlec Regional medical Center.
"I opened the door and ran out where I saw her naked and she's very disoriented and confused. I don't know if it was from the smoke or what," explained Wood. "We consider her a friend. We like to help her out, make her dinner and stuff sometimes and make sure she's ok. I'm just glad everybody's safe at this point."
Fire crews say they're not sure how the fire started. They're still at the scene cleaning up and the Fire Marshal will walk through as part of the investigation to hopefully determine how this all started.
Wood explained the injured woman didn't appear to be badly burned and he was just happy to see all four people that were at the home made it out. The Battalion Chief on the scene did not release the name of the injured woman.
