RICHLAND, WA -    When you hear a dozen teachers  from all over the state have come to Hanford High School to be in a STEM development workshop, building ukuleles probably isn't the first thing you think of.

But that's what's going on this week. The teachers are learning the math and physics behind how ukuleles sound they way they do, while they build the instruments themselves.

Eventually, they'll end up teaching the skills to their students back home.

"It's the same key concepts if they were sitting down in a math class," said instructor David Lake.  "They're up and around building things, working with their hands, learning those same things and having fun, making education more of a fun experience."

A lot of the teachers in this class are veterans of the program.

Two years ago they were in the Tri-Cities to learn how to build guitars.
