The Difference Between Amber Alerts and LEAP Alerts

Amber Alerts are a type of alert sent out by the LEAP Alert system. Amber Alerts are a type of alert sent out by the LEAP Alert system.
KENNEWICK, WA- Amber alerts and LEAP alerts are similar but have two different functions.

Recent missing persons cases, such as Jenise Wright, have brought up questions about the difference in an Amber Alert and a LEAP Alert.

According to Washington State Amber Alert Coordinator Carri Gordon the systems have two distinct functions.

“LEAP stands for Law Enforcement Alerting Portal and that is the web portal that we enter amber alerts in to, and that's the system that notifies the public about the amber alerts,” said Gordon.

The LEAP Alert is a web portal that is used to create Amber Alerts and other missing persons alerts.  The Amber Alerts are used to tell people about a missing child and law enforcement uses the leap system to enter the missing person's information.
