Pippins Inch Closer to Playoffs with 2-0 Win over Cowlitz

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA – When Andrew Woods is on the mound, the Yakima Valley Pippins can almost assure themselves a quality start from their right-handed hurler. That assertion held true again Tuesday night, as Woods allowed just three hits over eight shutout innings and the Pippins knocked off the Cowlitz Black Bears by a score of 2-0 at County Stadium.

After Woods needed 21 pitches to finish the top of the 1st, the Yakima Valley (32-18) bats rewarded him with an RBI single from Mitch Skaggs in the bottom of the 1st to make it 1-0.

With the score staying put at 1-0 for the middle innings of the game, Woods kept the Black Bears (22-28) in check. The right-handed pitcher out of Virginia Military Institute didn’t surrender a hit until the 3rd inning and never let a runner past 2nd base over his eight innings. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out six hitters, giving him sole possession of first place on the West Coast League leaderboard for strikeouts (58).

A sacrifice fly from Alex Guenette added an insurance run for Yakima Valley in the bottom of the 6th, as Woods continued to mow down the visitors from the Kelso-Longview area.

Kenny Rosenberg came on in the 9th to close out the victory and pick up his fourth save of the year. It was the Pippins fifth shutout win of the year. With the Pippins win and Wenatchee’s win in Kelowna, the Pippins magic number is down to one, meaning the Pippins will clinch the East Division with a win over Cowlitz at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday or a loss by Wenatchee at Kelowna.
