SPOKANE, Wash. - UPDATE: SPOKANE, Wash. - The head of Anna Browne's statue in the historic Browne's Addition Neighborhood was returned several hours after passerbyers noticed it was missing. What initially appeared to be a copper theft, now appears to have been the act of a Good Samaritan in the neighborhood who noticed the head was bent and wanted to detach it to get it repaired before it actually was taken with criminal intentions.

The Spokesman Review interviewed Karen Mobley, Spokane's former art director, who received a call from "a very nice lady" Wednesday around 5pm who said "She and her husband...didn't want to leave it for someone else to take. She just didn't get around to calling anyone."

Mobley said she was confident the woman did not have bad intentions and that she was "very embarrassed" she hadn't contacted someone sooner. The woman who removed the head did not want to be interviewed.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

SPOKANE, Wash. - As you enter Browne's Addition from Riverside, you are greeted by a sign that reads, "Historic Browne's Addition Neighborhood, Welcome, Established 1883."

Accompanying that sign has also been two life-sized statues representing Anna Browne and Alta Browne, the wife and one of the young daughters of J.J. Browne, for whom Browne's Addition is named. However, on Wednesday morning, one of KHQ's photographers noticed something was missing from the statue: Anna's head.

Both statues were made by Holy Names Sister Paula Turnbull around 2005. The statues are made of copper tubing and brass, so the task of getting the head off was not an easy one. A similar scenario played out in a 1990 episode of The Simpsons when Bart cut the head off of a statue of Springfield founder Jebediah Springfield. In that episode, Bart's conscious got the better of him and he confessed and returned the head. Browne's Addition neighbors are hoping whoever took the head from Anna Browne feels the same sense of guilt, and brings it back.
