UPDATE/PORTLAND, Ore. - Court records suggest a woman accused of killing one of her two daughters raised them at home with little contact with outsiders.
Jessica Smith, 40, has been charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter and trying to kill her 13-year-old daughter, who was found severely cut last week in a hotel room on the Oregon coast.
The 13-year-old didn't enroll in school in Goldendale, where the family lived for years. There was also no indication that she received homeschooling or attending a private school.
Smith and her husband, Greg, were divorcing amid a custody dispute. In his filings, Greg Smith says his wife raised the girls in a reclusive atmosphere.
ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) - Authorities in Clatsop County, Oregon, say a 2-year-old girl has been found dead at a Cannon Beach inn, a 13-year-old child was injured and the mother is being sought.
Cannon Beach Police Chief Jason Schermerhorn says a housekeeper discovered the children Friday morning at the Surfsand Resort. No adults were in the room. The 13-year-old girl suffered cuts and underwent surgery at a Portland hospital.
The chief said police are searching for 40-year-old Jessica Smith of Goldendale, Washington. She and her children checked into the room on Wednesday.
She might be driving a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban with Washington license plate, APX 3141. The chief describes her as a person of interest, and says police want to make sure she's safe.
Portland station KPTV reports that Smith and her husband recently separated.
