KENNEWICK, WA- Jessi Smith’s picture was chosen by the National Down Syndrome Society to be shown in Times Square.

Jessi Smith has Down Syndrome and is also a hockey fan.  After one of the games, she took a picture with Taylor Procyshen, who is one of her favorite players.  Her mother, Tracy Engel, saw the National Down Syndrome Society having a photo contest for 200 of the best pictures of someone with Down Syndrome being involved with the community, and decided to enter her daughter’s picture.

“It is one of my all time favorite pictures,” said Engel.

Engel said Procyshen and Jessi’s friendship grew after that picture was taken.

Out of over 2,000 pictures, Jessi’s was chosen for the contest.

“The day I got the news, I was going to burst, I was just so excited,” said Engel.

Engel said the picture is special to their family because it was one of the last moments captured before she had a Pulmonary Embolism.  It is highly terminal and Jessi was in a comma for a week.  She was left paralyzed on the left side and lost her eyesight.

“We almost lost her, but she was able to battle,” said Engel.

Jessie got a cane and named it after Taylor, and Taylor named his hockey stick after Jessie.

Jessi’s picture will appear on the Jumbotron in Times Square on September 20th during the Flagship Buddy Walk to raise funds and awareness for the National Down Syndrome Society.
