Yakima Designer Unveils 5 Downtown Master Plan Options

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA. -- The downtown master plan in Yakima has been in the works for sometime now. But Tuesday marked an important day in the new plans for the downtown revitalization.

Tuesday was the first day that the actual design plans for the plaza were unveiled. The city council was presented 5 different options to change the parking lot into the desired downtown plaza. All 5 options varied only slightly. They all had terraced seating, a water element and some lawn space.

Mayor Micah Cawley told us that the city council is taking this whole process very slowly on purpose.

"Everybody is not in a hurry," Mayor Cawley said. "We want to hear from people. We don't want to rush this. We're looking at this as something that instead of having a farmers market temporarily, you could have a year round market."

The one roadblock with the plan is parking. That is why the city council is moving forward with a parking plan, while they did not act at all on the plaza ideas presented Tuesday morning.

If you want to weigh in with your thoughts on the downtown plaza, the city council says they want to hear from you. They are holding a public meeting Tuesday night at 6:30 in city hall.
