SPOKANE, Wash. - Detectives with the Washington State Patrol are searching through the cell phone of a teen driver involved in a crash that killed a motorcyclist back in July on Highway 291.

On the morning of July 26th, 2014, Troopers say a 17-year-old girl was driving her 2000 Nissan Sentra south on Highway 291 when she entered the northbound lane and hit 62-year-old motorcyclist Robert White. White was wearing a helmet and was taken to Sacred Heart, but he later died.

On scene, investigators talked with the teen driver who hit White and court documents said she did not show any sign of impairment. The driver told Troopers she came around the corner, the sun was in her eyes, and that's why she veered off into the northbound lane. The Trooper interviewing the girl reminded her that the sun was actually at her back during the time of the collision, and court documents said she then thought about it for a bit and then stated she didn't really remember.

The driver then told Troopers her and the motorcycle were both close to the centerline, and each swerved the wrong way, causing the collision.

When asked if she had been doing anything that may have distracted her driving, like using her cellphone, the driver said that her cell phone was next to her, however she was not using it before the crash., and couldn't remember exactly what happened.

Ten days after the collision, detectives returned to the scene and drove through it twice between 7:30 am and 7:50am, the same time and direction the girl did the day of the crash. The detective determined the sun would have been behind the driver and high enough in the sky where it would not be shining into the mirror at that time of day.

Detectives seized the driver's phone and applied for a search warrant to try and determine if the teen was using her phone at the time of the crash. The results of their findings have not been released.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - As you may have heard, eclipse glasses are getting harder and harder to come by. As we get closer and closer to Monday's total solar eclipse, demand for solar eclipse glasses has skyrocketed in stores and online. Most stores we've contacted have reported being sold out of the eclipse glasses, so your best bet now is to grab a pair at a local viewing party.
