Fields of Grace Gleaning From More Residential Gardens

RICHLAND, WA - You might think picking nearly 600 pounds of peaches in an hour would be a daunting task. But when you see volunteers from Fields of Grace doing it, they make it look easy!

We first told you Wednesday, the organization recently hit a million pound milestone. Thursday, we saw how it works first hand at Ray French Orchards in Richland. The group we met with has gleaned more than 8,000 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables since June.

"A big part of our success has been with residential gleaning this year. We've had more and more people call us with an abundant number of fruits and vegetables that have appeared this year because of the wonderful weather we've had here in the Tri-Cities," said John O'Neill, of Fields of Grace.

The excess donations from farmer's market vendors have doubled since last year, as well. Almost 2,000 pounds of food from a single day were donated at the Market at the Parkway in Richland a few weeks ago. All of the food, gleaned or donated, goes straight to our local food banks.
