UPDATE: Customers react to Albertson's security breach

Posted: Updated:
UPDATE:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Local Albertson's customers tell KHQ they were surprised and a little worried about the security breach impacting nearly 400 Albertson's stores.

"Hopefully they'll get a handle on that stuff," said Bill Phares, a shopper in the store's busy parking lot on Nevada street. "I guess people need to change their passwords more often."

A spokesperson tells KHQ the security breach reached stores in Idaho, Montana and Washington. Albertson's says intruders tried to steal credit and debit card payment information for transactions between June 22nd and July 17th.

The company is working with law enforcement to investigate the case and identify potential victims.

At this time, it has not been determined whether any cardholder data was in fact stolen. Albertson's says so far it has no evidence of any misuse of customer payment information.

If you did buy anything at Albertson's during the breach window, the company is offering you one year of free identity protection.

PREVIOUS STORY:

SPOKANE, Wash. - KHQ has confirmed that 386 Albertson's stores were affected by a security breach to obtain credit card and debit card payment information.

The company is still trying to figure out the exact dates of the breach, but it believes it started on June 22 and ended on July 17. Albertson's says stores in several states, including Washington, Idaho and Montana were affected by the breach.

Albertson's says it can't confirm at this time that any cardholder data was in fact stolen, and so far the company says there is no evidence of any misuse of cardholder information.

Albertson's says it is offering customers whose debit or credit cards may have been affected 12 months of free consumer identity protection services through AllClear ID.

If you'd like to sign up for that service, you can call AllClear ID at 1-855-865-4449.

The breach affected another 450 Jewel-Osco, Acme and Shaws locations.
