Cobell Settlement Checks Could Be Mailed By Fall 2014

MISSOULA -

The people in charge of doling out money in the Cobell settlement want to put checks in the mail by this fall.

The $3.4 billion settlement comes from a 1996 class action lawsuit against the government after Montana tribes found money collected for Indian trust accounts were mishandled.

The US Department of the Interior still has to calculate who gets how much. Once that's done, they'll have to get court approval

Then, it should just be two or three more weeks by mail, according to the Garden City Group that gives out the settlement.

Of course, they can't guarantee any hard and fast dates.
