Fallen Deputy Was Veteran

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS, Mont. -

We now know the name of the deputy killed in the line of duty after a high speed chase.

He's been identified as 33-year-old Joe Dunn, a former marine who served in Afghanistan.

Deputy Dunn was struck and killed on U.S. Highway 87 near Belt.

Dunn leaves behind a wife and two children.

Reports are that authorities responded to a call about two men with guns -- that is when they discovered Adam Sanchez.

Sanchez is the suspect of the chase who possibly struck and killed the deputy during the pursuit.

Back in April, Sanchez faced three felony charges including criminal possession of dangerous drugs with intent to distribute.

The Cascade County Sheriff released this statement.

"Our hearts are heavy and full of sorrow at the loss of our brother. No words can truly describe how we feel. Deputy Dunn gave the ultimate sacrifice doing what he loved ... protecting the citizens of Cascade County. Deputy Dunn will be missed but never forgotten. Thank you for your dedication and service to the citizens of Cascade County. God speed Deputy Dunn."

Currently, there are multiple agencies working on this investigation.

We will continue to follow this story as it develops.
