Bank Re-authorization Risks Job Losses for Thousands

LOWDEN, WA - About 85,000 people in Washington state could be at risk of losing their jobs.

That's why Washington State Senator Maria Cantwell plans to tour a winery in the Walla Walla Valley on Monday, to push the importance of the US Export-Import Bank.

Cantwell is touring L'Ecole no.41 in Lowden, where the US Export-Import Bank supports about $1 million in exports to several other countries. All together, the bank helps Washington winemakers with about $70 million in exports.

But unless congress re-authorizes its charter by the end of September, the bank may be forced to stop helping with exports. Cantwell says that would threaten the local wine industry, and hurt nearly 200 exporters in Washington state.
