Kennewick Planning Commission Recommends Ban on Retail Marijuana Stores

Posted: Updated:
KENNEWICK, WA - The city of kennewick may be one step closer to banning the sale of recreational marijuana in the city.

The Kennewick Planning Commission unanimously voted Monday night to recommend a ban to the city council.

The public meeting held  Monday night at city hall was to review an ordinance prepared by the city attorney.

Kennewick has been approved for up to four marijuana retailers but none have received state licenses to open.

Retailers can get licensed but must get approval from cities to sell.

People on both sides of the issue voiced their opinions.

"In Benton County , the county in which I reside, let the record show that the citizens of Benton County voted against I-502 by over 50 percent," Brad Klippert said.

"The black market comes up, it's going to go back up, what's going to happen? More crime, let's do this right. let's get on and lets make this legal," Richard Smith explained.

The city council will now review the recommendation and take a vote September 2nd.
