Chinese Health Insurance Hack Hits the Yakima Valley

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA. -- Community Health Systems, a company that owns more than 200 hospitals nationwide, including Regional Medical Center and Toppenish Community Hospital, was hacked by a Chinese based cyber attack.

The attack happened between April and June and reportedly compromised the information of more than four million patients. These Chinese hackers didn't take medical history or credit card information, but the information they stole is just as bad.

They took names, addresses, birthdays, cell phone numbers and worst of all, social security numbers. This all came to light on Monday and it leaves patients wondering why they were told so late.

Hacking, the invisible thief, has struck close to home. But unlike recent reports, Yakima Regional Hospital patients were not the ones affected. According to a Yakima Regional spokesperson, the information that was stolen earlier this year came from the clinics associated with Regional Hospital. Places like Ahtanum Ridge Family Medicine were we spoke with Sharon Foster Tuesday.

"It is scary," Sharon Foster said. "I want to know, why didn't they send out a letter or notice before?"

Sharon says she isn't worried about her own information being stolen but she is concerned about her 8-year-old son Maverick.

"I'm worried what's going to happen with my children's records," Sharon said. "My mom is very sick, what are they going to do with her stuff, with her information?"

A Regional Spokesperson said in an email statement: "We take very seriously the security and confidentiality of private patient information and we sincerely regret any concern or inconvenience to patients. Though we have no reason to believe that this data would ever be used, all affected patients are being notified by letter and offered free identity theft protection."

But for Sharon that is not enough.

"Their statements are so vague, let's go into a little bit more detail," Sharon said.

On Tuesday, patients are being told that the company knows which clients info was stolen. Letters will be sent out August 30th to those affected. But if you would like to know sooner, an 800 number will be set up for patients to call.

Until then, that leaves patients like Sharon and Maverick in the dark, hoping their information is still safe.
