NBC RIGHT NOW-- If you are confused about whether or not your car, or a car you are considering buying, might be on a recall list, the U.S. Department of Transportation is unveiling a search tool to help sort that out.

Starting Wednesday, the DOT is offering a free online service that helps consumers research recalls by entering the car's vehicle identification number, or VIN, which is located right here on the windshield of you car.

According to the DOT, it will help drivers know if recalled vehicles are repaired and safe or if problems need to be addressed.

Once you enter the VIN number a database can provide you an in-depth record of safety issues for your vehicle regarding child restraints, tires, and equipment as well as see any safety complaints other customers have filed.

Staff at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said car owners may not always know their recalled vehicle still needs to be repaired so it is always better to be safe than sorry.
