Sex Crimes on the Rise in Yakima County

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA. -- The Yakima County Sheriff's Office hasn't dealt with very many violent crimes so far this summer. But they have seen a drastic increase in sex crimes.

Right now the Sheriff's Office doesn't have a reasonable explanation for the extra cases of sex crimes they've seen this summer. What the Sheriff's Office does know is that there have been 36 felony sex crimes cases this summer between May and August.

That number is compared to 27 during the same period last summer. The Sheriff's Office has only 2 deputies in their sex crimes unit and they are having trouble keeping up with their case load.

"I mean we seem to live in a sexually liberated world and so sex is being pushed on people through the media," Detective Mike Russell said. "I don't know if it has anything to do with that but I can tell you that from an investigators point of view this has been incredibly challenging for our two sex crimes detectives."

Detective Russell says these sex crimes are all felonies that range from rape to children molestation. The Sheriff's Office says these cases are more difficult to solve because of the sensitive nature of the crime but they are dedicated to finding and prosecuting every criminal involved.
