Downtown Yakima Prepares For 12th Annual Hot Shots Tournament

YAKIMA, WA.- With summer drawing to a close Yakima is preparing for one of its signature events.

Come Saturday morning, downtown Yakima will be filled with cheering fans and a three on three basketball tournament like none other.

Last year's tournament saw a record high of nearly 500 teams and organizers say they're looking at an even bigger turn out this year.

The Yakima Sports Commission begins preparing for this event months in advance. The 39 courts and some 15-thousand spectators brings business and tourism to downtown Yakima.

"It brings everyone together from old, young, affluent, and non affluent people, just every part of Yakima County,  It brings them together and it is one of the few events that does that," said Yakima Sports Commission Director Rich Austin.

The tournament completely closes down traffic on 1st Street in downtown Yakima, but Austin says local businesses have always welcomed the unique event and the publicity for their shops.

The first games tip off at 9 a-m on Saturday and teams will be competing all weekend.

Hot Shots organizers encourage everyone to come down, enjoy the competition, and support the local businesses.
