SPOKANE, Wash. - A 24-year-old man was arrested for DUI early Friday morning after police say he abandoned his car on train tracks in downtown Spokane shortly before it was hit by a train, and then broke his ankle fleeing the scene.

Just before 3:00am, Spokane Police were told a train hit a car near the intersection of S. Browne St. and W. Pacific Ave. When officers arrived they found an empty car. Witnesses told officers they saw two men leaving the area on foot.

A short time later, officer found the two men and determined the driver, Ruben Flores, drove his car west on the train tracks until it got stuck. As a train was approaching the car, police say Flores and his passenger bailed prior to impact and jumped down a seven foot embankment near Sprague and Division. Flores broke his ankle as a result of the jump.

Officers determined that Flores and his passenger had been drinking and Flores was arrested for DUI and transported to the hospital for treatment to his ankle.

No on else was hurt during the incident.
