Yakima Teachers Prepare For A New School Year

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA.- Schools all over Washington are preparing to welcome their students back, but many in Yakima still have critical teaching positions open.

As of earlier this week the Yakima school board was still trying to fill these teaching positions.

Assistant Superintendent Kelly Garza says they still need to find librarians, gym teachers, and even a few positions in the math and science departments.

The need for more staff came from a higher amount of teachers retiring, as well as increased enrollment

"We've got about 280 more students that we are projected to see at the beginning of the school year, so all that adds up to a lot more opportunities for teachers," Garza told us.

Hoover Elementary teachers told us that with positions still waiting to be filled many teachers throughout the area could see their class sizes double.

Schools throughout the area are introducing new curriculum this year and working to incorporate more hands on team activities for their students

Superintendent Garza told us they went through an extensive interview process today, hoping to find the best teachers for the Yakima school district.
